What causes acne scars / post acne spots?

Acne and its causes are the subject of ongoing debate amongst medical investigators and professionals. Acne occurs throughout the world and it’s occurrence is not solely confined to teenagers. Acne occurs more frequently in males during their adolescence but is more common in women after age twenty. When it affects adult men and women, often they experience more severe consequences. Acne treatment usually focuses on a time limited condition. But, sometimes acne treatment becomes a challenge for skin care medical professionals because in some patients acne frequently becomes difficult to treat and control. It becomes a devastating and recurring condition that can lead to acne scarring. In the more severe cases of acne and for reasons not clearly understood, acne scarring occurs in up to 14% of women and 11% of men. Acne and it’s potential causes should be investigated by the clinician.

There are multiple causes of acne. These include:

  • Hormonal dysfunction
  • An improper diet (e.g. high sugar intake, cow milk products)
  • Food allergies and sensitivities (e.g. gluten, soy, dairy products)
  • Intestinal and digestive problems (e.g. constipation, bloating, gas)
  • Chronic infections
  • Environmental toxins (e.g. heavy metals, chemicals, xenoestrogens, pesticides)
  • Lack of appropriate minerals and nutrients (e.g. low magnesium, zinc, Vit C)
  • Excessive sebum production

Acne scars are the result of bacterial overgrowth that occurs in the skin follicles after they become blocked by excessive oils and by a change in the keratin (the residual of old skin cells) production process such that it triggers an intense inflammatory response. This intense response by the immune system, at its worst, results in large pus filled pockets leading to the formation of nodules or cysts which lead to scarring of varying degrees of severity. Scarring occurs as the skin attempts to heal. The newly produced collagen becomes disorganized and thickens. Because the epidermis anchors to underlying skin layers, this results in scarring. The scars types are described by their appearance such as “ice-pick”, “rolling” or “boxcar”. Although most acne treatments target the normal bacteria residing in your skin and pores, the “infections” and pore blockage are usually a secondary response to a potential underlying problem. In order to control or stop the active acne process, one should investigate the potential causes of acne outbreaks. Acne is usually not just about the skin.

Why do some acne scars look like craters or indentations?

In some severe acne scars, the scar is recessed or crater shaped. Often, the indentation is caused when the deeper layers of the skin (including subcutaneous fat and muscle) under the acne wound is damaged or lost.

How can I treat acne scars?

It is well known that the esthetic disfigurement and the psychological damage caused by acne scarring can last a lifetime. Until recently, the prevailing medical thought was that acne scars are “very difficult” to treat given that past treatment options were so ineffective. This thought includes the more currently available treatment options that also provide limited results. Unfortunately, the extent of the psychological stress resulting from acne scarring has been seriously unappreciated and misunderstood by the medical community. For many years the medical community felt that few effective treatment options were available. Often the patients were advised to “live with the scarring”. Thankfully, you don’t have to live with acne scars anymore!

How Genuine (Original) Dermaroller® permanently reduces acne scars

A Medical Dermaroller ® treatment using the appropriate model is ideal for treatment of acne scars and other scars such as stretch marks. The roller contains sterile, ultra-fine, surgical strength micro-needles. The micro-needles cause new collagen and elastin to be deposited (collagenesis), new capillaries to be formed (angiogenesis) and new skin cells to be created. Please refer to Collagen Induction Therapy.

The only acne scar treatment that works – and it’s natural!

Two very important processes called collagenesis and angiogenesis, “fill” the former atrophic scar with newly formed tissue. Meanwhile, the new capillaries significantly improve blood supply to the area resulting in even-toned, healthier skin.

Why other skincare treatments can’t give you desired results?

To date, no ablative or non ablative procedure can stimulate collagenesis and angiogenesis. These two processes must occur for true and lasting skin regeneration. In fact, many use fractionated laser beams for scar treatment. We believe this treatment will not produce the desired results because the “hot” laser beam “fuses” the capillaries and other tissue elements. This suppresses new capillary growth which is critical for tissue regeneration. Only micro-needling creates new collagen and capillaries. This is why micro-needling is also referred to as Collagen Induction Therapy. When properly performed and with adequate patient preparation for achieve optimal results, Collagen Induction Therapy with the Medical Dermaroller® generally provides 70 – 80% improvement in scars. Because collagen fibers and new capillaries need time to mature, we strongly recommend a waiting period of at least 6-8 weeks or more between treatments. the Medical Dermaroller ® treatment provides a safer, extremely effective method for reducing acne scars. The minimally-invasive, non-ablative treatment ensures rapid results with no down time. You can quickly return to your regular activities with minimal after care.

HOW DOES THE DERMAROLLER WORK ON SCARS?

Dermaroller for scar treatment

MECHANISM of ACTION IN SCAR TREATMENT Fine microneedles perforate the scar tissue. The physician will notice a higher resistance when the needles penetrate the hard scar tissue. Also the patient can notice a slight cracking noise when the needles penetrate the scar tissue.

Micro-needling process with dermaroller After a sufficient perforation (about 15 to 20 passes over the scar) very fine petechiae (blood spots, but no bleeding) will be visible on the skin.
Micro-Needling with Dermaroler Only a few days after the treatment NEW fibroblasts and capillaries will migrate through the punctured scar tissue. Both processes result in new tissue formation to “fill” the former atrophic scar and new capillaries result in a significant better blood supply that in return results in an improved re-pigmentation.

The COLLAGEN-INDUCTION-THERAPY (CIT) by MICRONEEDLING will in general result in an improvement of 70 – 80%. Anything else above should be considered as a bonus. As collagen fibers and new capillaries need time to mature, we strongly recommend not to become impatient. Treatments should be separated by at least 8 weeks or more. At this point we also would like to emphasize the fact that from our point of view no ablative procedure will stimulate Neo-Angiogenesis, and that includes also fractionated laser beams. We believe it is the opposite since the “hot” laser beam “fuses” the capillaries and other tissue, and stimuli for sprouting of new vessels will be suppressed. THE DIFFERENCE – IMPORTANT TO KNOW Many do not understand the term ablative. It originates from Latin and means: to take away. All CO2 fractionated lasers take away, better: burn away skin. The Original Dermaroller® never does! This was well documented by a paper (Fractional Transepidermal Delivery: A Histological Analysis) from the Department of Dermatology, University Hospital of Bern/Switzerland.
